Artist Statement

These glass figures are loosely referred to as “shamans” based on Native American pictographs and petroglyphs especially of the southwestern United States. The forms serve as an archetype of spiritual experience and concepts of transcendence.

The non-glass sculptures combine something from the animal kingdom, the vegetable world, and the minerals found in the earth. These sculptures are the counterpart for the more ethereal themed glass works so that the concepts of spirit and matter can be sensed in a physical way in the gallery.

Art should play an influential role in directing us toward the good and can point u s to God and the ultimate goal of unity with God. Transcendence means “beyond the world” and is not an object of direct human experience or of scientific reason based on the evidence of the senses. It is faith that each individual is “transcendent” in the sense that his inner self or consciousness exists beyond the material world. This cannot be seen or experienced by the senses, yet we know that it exists and is the source of personal value.
